How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the more info G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump
